Chung’s result in the Ramsey Theory has created a great impact. Because of the results she had discovered, this theory has been properly proven, and could easily be applied to the fields of communication, computer science, and decision making. Her success in combinatorics did not end there. That was actually just the stepping stone to her journey made of significant contributions to the field of mathematics.
Spectral Graph Theory-now published as a textbook for several universities, this theory connects algebra and graphs into a different level.
ERdos on graphsThe Couple with Paul Erdos
- made together with her husband, Ron Graham, this publication contains the problems from the graph theory of Paul Erdos
awardsFan Chung’s contributions have not been ignored but have been noted and recognized, and because of these, she was awarded with the Allendoerfer Award for her excellent article entitle "Steiner Trees on a Checkerboard."

other contriButionsrelevanceAs you may have noticed, the listed contributions are all about graph theories. If you thought that graphs are not that important to be given that much attention, well then you’re probably wrong, because if they weren’t, then the 200 publications she made dedicated on graphs and its properties would have been useless.
But graph theories are, in fact, important, especially because it is applied in Internet computing, communication networks, software reliability, and discrete geometry. Fan Chung connects graph theories to other fields of science, and even mentions in her book , “Graph Theory in the Information Age”, that graph theories are used to organize massive data by building and examining the network formed by interrelations. To give you an idea of how important it is, Google’s web search algorithms are based on WWW graphs. Without this, Google won’t be able to have an organized sorting system. Just imagine how hard life would be if Google was not in order. This just emphasizes how significant the contributions of Fan Chung are. However, she is not limited to graph theories. She has also made contributions as a member of the editorial board of various journals. To view the complete works of Fan Chung, click the button below: |
